The second youth: unlocking our brain potentials.

Bruno Ribeiro do Couto

Head of the Cognitive Units at SHA Wellness Clinic, Spain

Professor Bruno Ribeiro is an expert in cognitive performance and neuropsychology. He holds a European PhD in Psychology from the University of Valencia.

Since enrolling in the clinical psychology programme at the University Institute of Health Sciences of Porto, Portugal, he has devoted himself to studying the workings of the brain. After his PhD, he completed his training with a postdoctoral degree at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the University of Porto and the Príncipe Felipe Research Centre in Valencia.

Ribeiro is a professor at the University of Murcia and teaches classes for several international master’s and postgraduate programmes. He has done research visits at several prestigious universities, including the University of Bordeaux, King’s College London, the University of California, Harvard University, and the University of Illinois. He has published more than 35 high-impact scientific articles. Ribeiro believes that walking cures almost everything. ‘As you walk, you turn your head, and your visual field shifts, you find stimuli on the right and the left, both brain hemispheres are activated, and walking makes them talk to each other. It’s a great exercise because, in the brain, one hemisphere always tends to dominate the other’. The professor walks almost every day, at a good pace and outdoors.

People enter Professor Ribeiro’s office with an open mind. He recommends meditating daily to give your brain a rest, but if this is too difficult, then he suggests praying. ‘The benefit is similar if you pray to give thanks and not to ask for something’. The explanation is simple. When we give thanks, our brain is dominated by alpha waves, and when we ask for something, our brain works at a lower frequency: ‘When we ask for something, it’s because we’re overwhelmed or in need’, he states. Professor Ribeiro is currently researching how a healthy brain works to get this organ into optimal shape with the help of new brain neurostimulation technologies. He is in charge of SHA Wellness Clinic’s state-of-the-art cognitive units, both in Spain and at the new clinic in Mexico.
